Rita Alaoui
Born in 1972 in Rabat, Morocco. Lives and works in Paris, France.

Rita Alaoui seeks to explore and rethink our relationship with the wild world and imagine connections with the extraordinary. Fascinated by the power of nature and concerned about a disappearing world, she focuses her approach on representing a dreamlike, sacred, and healing nature. With a protocol that may recall that of botany or archaeology, she places collection, accumulation, and observation of natural and seemingly ordinary objects at the center of her work. She collects and meticulously organizes them in the temple that is her studio, granting them a form of unsuspected sacredness or spirituality. She imparts an animistic dimension to each small fragment of bone, stone, seed, or plant.
Initially a painter, Rita Alaoui varies her modes of creation, ranging from painting to drawing, photography, installation, video performance, and the creation of artist books. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in France and internationally.

Rita Alaoui cherche à explorer et repenser notre rapport au monde sauvage, et à imaginer des connexions avec l'extraordinaire. Fascinée par la force de la nature, et préoccupée par un monde en disparition, elle oriente sa démarche sur la représentation d’une nature onirique, sacrée et guérisseuse. Avec un protocole qui peut rappeler celui de la botanique, ou de l’archéologie, elle met au centre de son travail la collection, l’accumulation et l’observation d’objets naturels et apparemment banals, qu’elle recueille, et qu’elle organise ensuite avec méticulosité dans le temple qu’est son atelier, leur donnant ainsi une forme de sacralité ou de spiritualité insoupçonnée. Elle confère à chaque petit fragment, d’os, de pierre, de graine, de plante, une dimension animiste. D’abord artiste peintre, Rita Alaoui varie ses modes de création, allant de la peinture au dessin, à la photographie, à l’installation, à la vidéo-performance et à la constitution de livres d’artistes. Ces travaux ont fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions en France et à l’internationale.
