Biography

Rita Alaoui is a French-Moroccan artist, born in Rabat in 1972, who lives and works in Paris. She graduated from the Parsons School of Design New York, where she lived until the end of the 1990s. 

Fascinated and amazed by the force of nature, Rita Alaoui directs her approach on the incessant representation of a dreamlike and sacred nature.

Although strongly inspired by the wild landscapes and the particular light of Morocco that rocked her childhood, her work focuses on the universal. She mixes several references, from the art of the garden to which she gives an animist dimension, not without recalling a certain romanticism.

Initially a painter, Rita Alaoui varies her modes of creation, ranging from painting to drawing, photography, installation, vidéo-performance and the creation of artists' books. With a protocol which can recall the one of botany or archeology, Rita Alaoui puts at the center of her work the collection, accumulation and observation of objects that she finds in nature, that she organizes with meticulousness in the temple that is her studio, giving them this way, a form of sacredness or unsuspected spirituality. Each small fragment, stone, bone, plant, becomes a rich subject for the artist who pays particular attention to their, sometimes unusual, shapes and textures.

The question that drives Rita Alaoui's research is her role as an artist in relation to this silent material that surrounds us: it is for her reproducing the remains of nature left by the passage of time, rethinking our connection to the wild world, re-interpreting the familiar and imagining connections with the extraordinary.

Her paintings explore the details of natural and apparently ordinary objects, which she collects, which she sometimes stages in pictorial works that recompose spaces and relationships between these objects. Thereby, the view from the garden as seen from her studio has led her to create pictorial works in which she composes spaces where she confronts objects or furniture within a domesticated natural environment.

Particularly interested by the intimate and free relation nurtured between writing and visual art, and passionate about the book-object, Rita Alaoui also conducts her research around the creation of artists' books. She combines a plastic and aesthetic work of the object to a simple and meditative form of writing, in books of which each copy becomes a unique and in some ways also a sacred work of art.

Rita Alaoui's work has been the subject of numerous national and international exhibitions.

Fascinée et émerveillée par la force de la nature, Rita Alaoui oriente sa démarche sur la représentation d’une nature onirique et sacrée.

Bien que fortement imprégnée par les paysages sauvages et la lumière si particulière du Maroc qui ont bercé son enfance, son travail porte sur l’universel. Elle mêle plusieurs références, de l’art du jardin auquel elle donne une dimension animiste, non sans rappeler un certain romantisme.

D’abord artiste peintre, Rita Alaoui varie ses modes de création, allant de la peinture au dessin, à la photographie, à l’installation, à la vidéo-performance et à la constitution de livres d’artistes. Avec un protocole qui peut rappeler celui de la botanique, ou de l’archéologie, Rita Alaoui met au centre de son travail la collection, l’accumulation et l’observation d’objets qu’elle trouve dans la nature, qu’elle organise ensuite avec méticulosité dans le temple qu’est son atelier, leur conférant ainsi une forme de sacralité ou de spiritualité insoupçonnée. Chaque petit fragment, d’os de pierre, de plante, devient un sujet riche pour l’artiste qui porte une attention toute particulière à leurs formes et leurs textures parfois insolites.

La question qui anime la recherche de Rita Alaoui est celle de son rôle en tant qu’artiste par rapport à cette matière silencieuse qui nous entoure : il s’agit pour elle de reproduire les vestiges de la nature, laissés par le passage du temps, de repenser notre connexion au monde sauvage, de réinterpréter le familier et d’imaginer des connexions avec l’extraordinaire.

Ses peintures explorent les détails des objets naturels et apparemment banals, qu’elle recueille, qu’elle détourne parfois en les mettant en scène dans des œuvres picturales qui recomposent les espaces et les relations entre ces objets. Ainsi, la vue du jardin depuis son atelier l’inspire à faire germer des espaces où se confrontent le monde sauvage et la nature domestiquée.                  

Intéressée par la relation intime et libre qu’entretiennent l’écriture et les art visuels et passionnée par le livre-objet, Rita Alaoui mène aussi sa recherche autour de la création de livres d’artistes. Elle mêle un travail plastique et esthétique de l’objet à une forme d’écriture simple et méditative, dans des livres dont chaque exemplaire devient une œuvre à part entière, unique et en quelques sortes aussi, sacrée.

Le travail de Rita Alaoui a fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions à l’échelle nationale et internationale.
